Since I've spent today doing nothing thanks to a birthday hangover, I figured I'd start working on a texture pack for this, since nobody else seems to be.
All original content, all tile correctly, all 1024px.

Suggestions of what else to include?
So far we have:

3 variations of grey metal walls.
3 variations of cyan metal walls.
2 variations of rugged wood walls.
6 variations of white concrete walls.
3 variations of metal trusses.
2 variations of concrete pillars.
2 variations of tiled concrete floors.
1 mossy ground.
1 metal floor with indents.
3 variations of dark carbon fibre.
1 light blue generic metal.
2 variations of grates.
2 variations of concrete floors.
2 variations of odd sized bricks.
1 Glasgow street criss-cross brick floor.

Edit:
I forgot about doors and lights for Goldsource mappers. Don't worry about them, I'll make some. Other suggestions still needed, though.

If there is dozens of all kinds of textures in the pack then it becomes pretty pointless because the maps are going to be completely random. We need either a basic concept of the map or a smaller texture pack with a more fixed theme.
Posted 12 years ago2011-09-20 18:04:26 UTC Post #299154
A smaller texture pack than the preview I just showed would be totally unworkable. Keep in mind that without the variations, there are only 14 textures there.
When I was designing them, I was thinking of how they could all be used in one theme, and I think they're perfectly suited.
I was going to add around 10 more, including doors, windows & lights.

There should be a rule that every texture must be used, to add to the challenge.

Well then tell us the theme.

Modern industrial, but they would suit a lab or a military base, too.

I'd suggest you do another variation of the top left texture, with a left pointing arrow. Unless the texture also tiles when mirrored, it's an important detail.
Posted 12 years ago2011-09-20 19:14:44 UTC Post #299160
To tell you the truth, most of these textures look too TF2-ish
Posted 12 years ago2011-09-20 19:43:31 UTC Post #299164
I slightly agree, but keep in mind it's the other way around, TF2 is based off of industrialized content. It's kind of like saying a car model for HL2 reminds you of NFS.

The texture pack should allow for widest use of themes. The texture pack you're posting Archie is quite good, but I would feel very restricted in terms of creativity. Perhaps try and include more material types and less decal and colour variations of the same material types.

How about we mix a lot of texture packs? We can add Natural Selection to that one.

I'm happy to expand on the themes. 'Tis why I was asking for suggestions. You guys should contribute as well, but I think the competition would be more meaningful if the textures are 100% original content, rather than taking textures from existing packs.

Also, Natural Selection textures would be no good because they're too low-res for Source mappers.

Wow, I just started reading about them source textures... Godommit fronk! There's a lot more to them than the HL-wad files...

Anywho it's almost 2 am and I gotta go sleep. I just wanna request more transperent textures mainly;
  • Ladder / "Hand rail"
  • Green stuff, hanging grass or other veggies
A rather restricted texture pack can be good cuz of the challenges it brings. One with more content could be nice too cuz you have more freedom. I can't choose which one I prefer more.

I don't think there is anything wrong with those textures. If they make for fairly limited environments, then use them in a unique way to make the environment as interesting as they can be. Of course, more textures would be cool too. :D

Thanks tons Hunter, Strider and I were scratching our heads about where the hell we'd get a decent texture pack from. It's awesome that you took the initiative and started one yourself, respect++.

Once everyone's reasonably happy with the textures we'll get a compo page up. Thoughts on time limits? I was thinking 2 months.

2 and a half. Schools Started and most of might need that extra push. This will be my first compo I compete in :)

Yeah, 2 and a half so I get 2 months to work on it. I really want to enter this one.

This is pointless. If there are zero rules and restrictions then why couldn't we use our own textures? This is only going to restrict our imagination yet the maps are going to be totally random because there is no restricted theme at all.

Dragos, I'm really confused as to why you're being so negative about this.

Even with 20 textures + variations, that's still a very limited palette, and there's only so much you can do with those.
Having too defined a theme will remove creativity, and giving people more self-regulation with how they use the textures will give some really unique and interesting results.

Like I said, though, I'm only going to make a few more and then I'll send them to pengy and strider, and they can decide amongst themselves if they want to use them.

I've done all the textures with a grid, as well, so the details such as the dark borders at the bottom of the first wall textures in that preview image line up properly with the Hammer grid. This means you can make detailed brushwork that will fit the textures perfectly.

Looking good archie, but I agree that they seem a little un thematic. Think "dust theme", "aztec theme", "jungle theme", "robotic theme" etc... I think the lab theme has been a littler overplayed don't you think?

Nice work, Archie.
We'll definitely use them, but I might take the variations out of it to keep it's a bit more broad, like so:
User posted image
Send them all anyway, I'd like a good look at them. I also have a few similiar textures of my own I can throw in there to make up the numbers, so this will work out well, I think. A general industrial theme is pretty vague, and would require some effort to make it unique, and I like that.

Are there normal maps to suit? If not, don't worry, I can give them a cheat run through CrazyBump and get something close enough.

Is everyone okay with Penguinboys time frame? 2 months seems pretty fair.

EDIT: Just so I know when I'm making the WAD, is 256x256 pretty much the GldSrc standard these days?

Yep!
Is this any different?
Yep! It has some bolts nailed into it at random. It just breaks up the monotony a bit. I'm not sure I actually like that texture much, anyway. It looked cooler in my head.

Most excellent!

I've dug up about 5-10 suitable textures I can add to the pack (plaster walls, metal floors, tiles), so I'll get those up to scratch. PM me a link whenever you're ready, and we'll get the rules up.

Posted 12 years ago2011-09-21 14:42:47 UTC Post #299213
No, they're pretty good. I just mean that all the entries are going to be random because the textures doesn't have any theme and there is nothing to aim at for the mapper... So like zeeba-G said (dust, aztec) we need something more thematic or a short description of the map along with your themeless textures.
Posted 12 years ago2011-09-21 14:45:15 UTC Post #299214
Yea I agree, the point has been made clear. Good textures just could be more thematic...

And i'm curious about the poll as well...

I also agree that lights and water are necessary. And a glass texture? And doors even for source.

Is resizing the textures allowed? I mean changing the resolution from 256x256 to 128x128.

To minimize face tiling and w_polys.

You'd probably be reducing your chances of winning by making them look significantly worse, though.

The judges all have fairly good PCs, I really don't see why you'd sacrifice so much texture quality (and lighting quality, because textures scaled to 0.50 have more defined lightmaps) for a barely noticeable w_poly saving.

Posted 12 years ago2011-09-21 22:08:16 UTC Post #299232
I would only do it if I deem it really necessary. Depends on what I will map. And I was not thinking of doing it to all textures.

I don't want to make a map not suitable for the game engine is all.
Posted 12 years ago2011-09-21 22:26:41 UTC Post #299233
If you really feel the need to scale the textures down, go ahead. Just don't alter them in any way.
We should make sure to have lights and water and all that jazz too.

Good point, we'll knock some together.

If its really big the judges will notice, if its small and no one does, who cares?
Posted 12 years ago2011-09-22 02:52:38 UTC Post #299239
Yea, and if you do they will notice and you'll be disqualified... That's just sort of a silly question because "you can see" the textures used... If you can't then why on earth would it matter?

Anyways, guess it won't be very thematic but who cares.
Posted 12 years ago2011-09-22 06:28:44 UTC Post #299242
And who the hell are the judges? This is all bullshit. Everyone in the community should be the judges. Or at least let us choose them from time to time.

In case it slipped your mind, Dragos, the last compo was entirely community judged. Not every compo is, though, and I don't think that this one will be. Now could you please stop being such an arrogant jerk bag? The admin team puts a lot of effort into keeping TWHL a nice place, and if you keep being such a tool, you'll no longer be welcome. You're free to offer suggestions and ideas, but not in such a rude and offensive manner.

Dragos please, you are pissing in the pool that everyone is swimming in and then you attack everyone else for asking you to stop peeing in the pool.

Please, from the bottom of my heart, can you be a little more considerate and diplomatic in your ways of communication. In other words:
  • Curse words are ok IMO, if you don't use them assault people, like you do.
  • Be more accepting, or understanding, and if there is something you think could be changed for the better please inform in what way it may be improved and why, instead of just saying it is stupid or sucks.
We don't want to swim in piss.

Best regards
