Yes, that's what I meant to say. Not only low-end, but bottom-end. Bottom-end everything.

Used to run an old 17" 1280x1024 monitor (4:3 Master race), but now Ive got an 24" 1920x1200 Full HD one. The difference is:

I remember that, before my PC's death in 2014, I had an LCD monitor. Its native resolution was 1440x900.
I still have it today, so I hope I won't need a new one, once I buy parts for my PC :)

I think that 1440x900 is a nice compromise between 720p and 1080p :D
Though, it's not 900p, because that's 1600x900 (I think).

Maybe getting a little off-topic.

Working on a small test map, the first one I hope to finally finish.

Far Cry is for PC! (it wasn't released for Genesis, obviously)
Man, do I hate jokes like this, especially sarcasm. Really, if anybody is willing to communicate with me, exclude any jokes other than memes.

Bruce, the graphics are like this because:
 • Incomplete UV maps
 • Very low res textures = low res shadowmaps
 • Terrible lighting
Dude. It's simply because of the process! BSP gets converted to OBJ, and that is converted into a Far Cry model (untextured, in my case).

Oh you know what? Screw it! I was trying to be nice to everyone, but it probably isn't worth it. I just say "Hey, I'm porting de_dust2 to Far Cry" and you respond with "great graphics, is it for SNES or Mega Drive?". Damn you, man. I might aswell cancel all my WiPs and seriously never finish them. I might even start writing the F word uncensored, I might even start hating you! Stop it.

I had a bad day at school today, that probably explains my reactions :(

Edit:
Do you know what's preventing me from behaving badly? Admins, moderators, site rules, my personality, my reputation, and me.

Cool it. He spoke in jest, not in derision. If you know why it looks the way it does, and it's not your fault, it's hardly worth the worry. Just do what you do :)

That said, if you just said the only jokes you want to experience are memes, the door's just over here. link

Nonono. I only needed to export the textures from CS and do some basic UV-mapping. Then, it would look something like this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XyKTRfDr67w
That guy directly ported cs_office into Far Cry. And I'm trying to do the same with de_dust2.

Sadly, the worst part is, exactly, the texturing :o
Standard CS maps refer up to 150 textures, and that means I'll have to apply 150 different materials in 3ds Max, and convert 150 bitmaps either into JPEG or DDS.

Oh and, I'm feeling much better now, and I calmed down :D

Unfortunately, Crafty doesn't load the textures at all, only the embedded BSP textures. It's a problem, or maybe not a problem, who knows.

Anyway, I got it to a somewhat-OK phase:

What v3.0!?

The one I linked was version beta 3 (I think) so that translates to v0.3 in my versioning system. The second picture shows the reboot in v0.001 (pre-alpha 1).

But hey, my school map will certainly be good :)
About the good texturing part, well, I'll try my best and we will see what happens.

Dunno shomehow I have the feeling some people are going into asshole mode here in TWHL, maybe they should remember they started @ zero too one day. Admer456 since you are really young and allready made a lot of cool maps, I think you are able to do even better, maybe I should teach you how to use some stuff in a better way.

Also Vodka, I like your ideas about a mine cs map but there isn´t much to see yet :) Also keep working on the maps, it is the only way to get better.

I think every new mapper is really welcome in such a dead and unfriendly community.

Why, thank you Trempler :D
I started mapping when I was 12, and even then, things had lots of potential. Though, as my skills improved, I lost potential and ideas (maybe not, who knows)

But then, I have these unfinished WiPs, so that's at least one thing I can work on :)
E.g. Sandstorm, Left4Crabs, dm_/fy_stoned, fy_rknsand, de_kobbl (I'll get paid for that one), de_crater and de_avposs (a.k.a de_stroytheschool). Many more to come.
maybe I should teach you how to use some stuff in a better way.
Well, that would certainly be nice.
I am a (mostly) self-taught mapper, and nobody ever taught me anything. What I know is my own knowledge I gathered, mostly from my experience. Tutorials helped me start, I "brushed" off the rest. xD (get it?)

So, the scars of self-teaching are certainly noticeable in me :)

I know that feeling too, I started mapping with 10. Now I´m 29.. so yeah there are still features and stuff I never know about, even after all this.

And yeah try to finish something, I have this perfection problem and stop releasing stuff that is nearly 95% done but than something turns out bad. Anyway.

Yes, every of us are still newbies here... :\ Anyway, we all have seen what he did with CRY engine porting Dust, maybe our expectatives did sound a bit like criticism, if so, sorry. Give me the Asshole Award if there´s one round here :walter:

Just as a reminder: he´s only 14 years old!!, what he would achieve with 29, 30 or more years ? I did started at 25 with full bright maps, didn´t know what was a leak almost after 3 months after my first map... :crowbar:

BTW:

Yeah, see, I'll turn 15 on the 23rd of February :D
Man, finally a nice number. 15 is quite a neat number, actually. It's 1/4 of a minute (in seconds), and so, it's 1/6 of 90°. Man, I can't wait to turn 15.

@Trempler
So you're saying:
"Stop releasing stuff when you go up to 95% and then something goes wrong."
What? Only 3 GoldSrc maps ever reached even 80%, at least in my situation. Those include: fy_rknsand, de_kobbl and ts_untergrund.
Only of which, ts_untergrund was released as a map.

Or maybe I didn't understand what were you saying :/

They are concrete slabs, how come you didn't understand that?
I mean, why would we ever have wooden planks on the stadium?

If I were to walk on that in school, they would snap and break. That's why we have concrete slabs instead :)

Neat, although not much to see. I like the overall feel. However, the bulb is too bright (actually, it shouldn't be bright at all because no light goes out of it). Also, the window is too bright as well.

Your lighting doesn't really make sense. You've got a completely exposed bulb, so the most realistic light to choose is a light right at your model. If you had a directional light, it would make more sense to use a light_spot. The first picture seems more accurate but the whole thing should be much brighter; would even combine an env_glow or env_sprite with it as well.

Your second picture's lighting is probably equivalent to having a small desk lamp on the ceiling pointing straight down

Posted 7 years ago2017-02-15 18:18:50 UTC Post #333534
How's this?
I was trying to get a slightly eerie feeling off of the map, but I guess the lighting itself didn't really fit right in the end, either that or I need to brush different lighting devices.

Now that I think of it, making an entire map of lighting stuff might be helpful for me in the future, beats having to brush a new light every time I want to make a specific mood.

Funny enough, I actually found an image of the map before the first HDD crash before the other one (it was THAT bad), it looks like this:

This map's more of a refresher course mapping than actual ingame map that I was doing in the other image, so, things might look too overdone.
