I fail to see why portal is in, seriously. HL1 and HL2 & Episodes are all sorta the same, while you could call Portal a game of his own. Actually a PUZZLE-game of his own. I dunno, it feels rather unfair. Portal puzzles are all sorta the same (as in, how can I get to the end by using portals), they will be just more of Portal THE GAME rather than a self-thought puzzle IN HL. Well, I find it hard to describe but hopefully my point came across. I think it just ruins the originality and diversity. But heh, whatever.

I never play a female character as they just don't feel tough enough.
Besides, I just have this feeling; I am a man, so I play a man.

But that's personal, if some dude wants to play a female character then why not? I don't mind. If he wants to, let him.

Dudes, haven't we once considered that the stick figure in the first gif might be doing the macarena? ..or some other silly dance?

..no?

..sure?

Ok fine, he is jerkin' off. Atleast he's being original. It could be a hit in the gay scene. There are people getting arroused by Anime, so there might be a secret market for stickfigure pron. Striker, YOU R A WINNARR!!!!

@ Madcow

Just use the arch tool, ctrl+m x=90, cut it in half, closen up the width to the right size (the arches on that pic seem to have a width of 32) , align the textures by selecting the correct surfaces (the face down/inside ones) holding alt and pressing second mouse on the to be aligned surfaces (the sides). Put the wanted texture on the face down/inside surfaces. Done.

..might have missed something, haven't mapped in ages, this is from the top of my head.

Toy Story (2) owned, I liked Monsters Inc. and Finding Nemo. I didn't really like A Bug's Life however.. I also watched The Incredibles, but I can't remember shit 'bout that movie, so I figured that wasn't very entertaining either.

Toy Story is from Pixar right? Ah, I love that movie. I remember that they had a (perhaps Toy Story 2..) a 'shitty celebrity and popular culture reference' in that, which I might add, I found 1 of the most funniest jokes ever in a animation movie considering I laughed about it and still know that joke till this date on. "You killed my father!" "No Buzz, I am your father", obviously a star wars reference.

Emperor Zurg is epic.

Now, on-journal.... Alien vs Predator (with arny) was a enjoyable movie, other than that, I have yet to see a good Aliens movie OR play a good Aliens game. I saw the latest movie with Alien, man... I want my money back.

Aye, what Naserve says is true. They get money from advertisements in the loading times between maps and by microtransactions for clothes, but nothing that makes your character superior.

If I get into the beta (doubt it tho), i'll post some screenies. :)

Yes, it's free alright. Where they get the money from you ask? From advertisements in the loading times between maps, which really, I don't think is such a big thing. You don't have to pay for shit to get an advantage over a other player.

@ Strider

Ok, it's questionable, I give you that. But does it really matter? A good game is a good game. Surely this game has the same input (cartoony violence) but that doesn't mean the games are identical to each other.

Ow stop being such a bunch of narrowminded TF2 fanboys and just try the game when it's out, instead of whining that it's a crappy TF2 wannabe. It's free afterall!!

@ Madcow

It's a closed beta, which you can play by invitation.
But when the beta is done, you'll just click, download and play.
We'll hook up and play a game sometime, okay? :D

Just because it has the same graphic style?
There are many games with the same graphic style..

Unlike TF2 (not sure tho, please correct me if I'm wrong), this game can actually be handled by crappy old computers. Besides that, it's a great game to pick up and just play with your RL mates who either aren't real gamers or who don't have any Valve games.. ;)

Most things have already been stated, so I don't feel like repeating them.
I was glad to play a HLDM map that steps away from the usual concrete commonness of the most HLDM maps. The map has a odd feeling to it, but in a well-executed way. While I have my doubts about lightning and architecture at certain places, you still managed to create a lovely atmosphere where you simply 'awe' at while walking around. I dunno about gameplay, I agree with hotdog that there is little room for dodging, personally I think that's a bad thing.

But all by all, a well deserved 5 stars.

7.0/10
Architecture — 7.5
Texturing — 7.5
Ambience — 8
Lighting — 7
Gameplay — 5

Review

The main area of the map, the lobby, is based of a screenshot from the lobby of the at time of writing yet to be released HL2 mod Black Mesa: Source. From a remake point of view, Ansiths lobby looks almost exactly the same like the lobby it is based on. Architecture, texturing and lightning look very similar. Even Ansiths brush-based prefabs (chairs, computers etc) are incredible similar to the models they need to resemble! The maps ambience, basicly your typical machinery sounds, might be a bit boring, but they work and never get annoying. Scripted sentences are carefully sorted out and do their part aswell. Counting this all up, the map (especially the lobby) has great atmosphere. But enough with the praising, because this map most certainly has its bad stuff. While the lobby is a awesome piece of work, it has its flaws. These flaws mostly regard bad texturing, but consider some architecture aswell. Leaving the lobby, I find myself walking in hallways and rooms with incredible bland lightning (and architecture), making the generic lab textures look awfull aswell. Another thing I must adress, is gameplay. This map just begs for more interactivity imho. The only thing I could press is the red security button! Where is the laptop and light switch which we could press in the original c1a0 for example! Cmon!

Bottom Line

While Ansiths map isn't anything breathtaking, Black Mesa Lobby HL1 Remake is a nice map with a cosy deja-vu feeling. It's certainly worth your time.

The lobby was awesome, with the only downsides being the chairs (they look cheap tbh..) and the fact Barney was behind glass! The atmosphere was superb. However, the rest of the map didn't match the quality of the lobby, hence 4 stars instead of 5.

It's great to see how much you're improving, so keep it up! :D

Ow, you bunch need to quit your whining. I agree that this is a bad map, but damn people, BEHAVE!

@ Athlete.

Wow, back to your Jimmi days?

@ redka (and srry, but I assume that's just a incredible lame joke).

It's hard to come up with a original theme. There are a lot of maps with the same theme, but that doesn't mean there are bad maps.

@ rayK.

I haven't played the map, but I think I can give you my opinion just from reading your description. I like the idea, but a room in pitch black just won't cut it. It would be better to have some subtle white lightbulbs hanging from the ceiling, that you can shoot out (making the environment pitch black) every round. A map like this depends on atmosphere to make it any interesting.

@ Athlete.

FY isn't always bad. It isn't fullbright.
Dust theme is overused, but not bad if done well.
Crates aren't always bad, and neither is a killbox.

You fail. Kkthxbye.

@ rayK

I know some people may come across rude on this site, but I advice you to stick around and learn from your mistakes. Maps like these are always badly recieved here. Be more original and work on your skills. :)
