Simply VMing gives inconsistent width. You don't get a lot of wiggle room because some parts might be 1 unit wide, and other parts might be too fat or way too thin of you move the vertices around too much.Would be interesting to see that trick of yours. The last time I did something like that, I used to move the verticles according to the angle the wires are touching, so visually it would look like it still is as wide/fat as they should be.
There's a nice trick to keeping a fairly consistent width around corners or large curves.
