in TWHL Regulars Post #273256
I may not post here nearly as often as I used to due to the fact that I've basically stopped mapping altogether, but I still lurk the site and IRC channel pretty much every day.

Probably shouldn't be spoon-feeding a solution, but hell, I haven't used C++ in a while and thought it'd be fun to write. :P

But yeah, Striker.. what everyone else said.

No, the channel isn't down. Turn off SSL maybe? The server you're connecting to might not support it. And I'm guessing the Address should just be irc.gamesurge.net.

srry, FF 3.5 is pretty much the clear winner when it comes to memory usage. And while definitely not in wide usage yet, the things HTML 5 makes possible are quite compelling if you ask me.

Yeah, VC++ 6 is probably your best bet. And everything is freeware on the internet if you know where to look, hint hint.

You should also be able to use VC++ 2008 Express (which is free) for HL1 coding, or at least for the server-side project, which I've gotten to compile in VS08 with a hefty amount of modifications. Dunno about the client-side but I'm sure it's possible.

in The rumored handheld Xbox360 Post #267373
Nintendo rule the handheld console market. The sooner other companies realise that the sooner we can get all this extra bullshit off the shelves.
Yeah, you're right. And I guess since Microsoft currently dominates the operating system market everyone else should just give up trying to create a better OS, right? As much as I love my DS, competition is always a good thing.

And please don't mention Nickeplate, the guy's a dick.
I suppose that's why basically every single one of #twhl's old regulars moved into the other channel with the exception of you Penguinboy and Ant... you guys are the only ones who've ever had a problem with him. Anyway it's a tired argument, this happened what, a year and a half ago? People need to stop holding grudges over retarded shit.

in TWHL's death? Post #266260
Thread basically over with Penguin's post. Rabid and rowley stopped coming here ages before you even joined, Jeff, and as far as I can tell the level of activity has remained pretty much the same over the past few years. Stop caring about TWHL so much and go map or something.

And we definitely do need moar people on IRC. To be honest the channel is a shell of its former #twhl self at this point, but it's still so much better than the forums when it is active.

Also Jeff, not to be a grammar nazi or anything, but after seeing you do this like 10 different times across the forums: it's didn't, not did'nt. FFS.

in Swine Flu Post #266094
The difference between swine and bird flu is the latter is transmitted almost entirely from contact between a person and bird, while swine flu's been confirmed to be transmitting purely through human-to-human contact.

in Swine Flu Post #266086
@m0p: Well yeah, I'll definitely agree that the media has vastly exaggerated the whole thing. But the fact is it's a new strain of flu no one's been immunized for that's primarily been affecting young, healthy people. Obviously it's not going to be THE END OF THE HUMAN RACE AS WE KNOW IT OMGGGGGGGGGGG but that doesn't mean you should completely dismiss it.

@Tito: I'd actually advise against paying attention to the majority of TV/news outlets concerning things like this. And linking to FOX news doesn't really help your argument much, lawl. The first two paragraphs of that article (which are all I could really stand to read) are so over-dramatized it makes me cringe. The best source for news on this is probably the CDC's page.

Or, instead having to make your own WAD and all that, you can just use any of the random textures besides the one that begins with "-0" and it won't randomly tile. So in your case, either -1crete6 or -2crete6.

in OMG ! c++ problem Post #263285
If you'd like this to be compilable for *nix as well, you can add this to the top of your file:
#ifdef WIN32
    #include <windows.h>
    #define Sleep(x) Sleep((x)*1000)
#else
    #include <unistd.h>
    #define Sleep(x) sleep((x))
#endif
You'll have to specify the time in seconds instead of milliseconds though. Not that this little app needs to be cross-platform anyway, but just for future reference.

You can add new dialog resources in ResHacker, but to get them to actually do anything or show up when you click a menu item you'd need to inject code into the executable. For that you're going to need a solid understanding of an app like OllyDbg and x86 assembly-level debugging. :P

Also, lrn 2 back up your work.

http://caboose.kkore.net/files/desktop_09_jan.jpg

I recently made the move to Ubuntu, and I've gotta say I don't miss Windows in the slightest. Got all my gfx/wireless/etc. drivers installed and working without a hitch, and there really aren't any Windows apps I need that don't either work under Wine, or have just-as-good-if-not-better Linux alternatives. Plus, GNOME seems to have done a way better job than Vista of providing a simple, coherent, and attractive UI. It's got all the usability benefits of a Mac, without actually having to use one of those horrid things. :)

in Vista Lag Post #260751
The constant HDD activity is due to all the crap Vista does in the background - indexing, defragging, SuperFetch, system restore, shadow copies, etc. These are all run as low-priority I/O threads, though, so they only execute while the computer is idling.

in Visual Basic Post #257079
I was thinking about this the other day; why not convert my Compilator and my Half-Life Launch Pad to C# code instead, because i've heard its faster.
Not really, no. C# and VB.NET offer pretty much identical performance since they're both compiled down to the same CIL code. The real choice you're making is to use the .NET framework; choosing between C# and VB.NET is really a matter of personal taste. To be honest Muzz, I don't see the point in converting your app to a language you're not comfortable with and possibly introducing new bugs in the process just to appease the C# evangelists ( :P ). You won't make it run any faster, the code will be harder to maintain, and the end-user won't even know the difference.

And why use SharpDevelop just for the code conversion feature when there are plenty of other sites that do just that?
