So I'm playing HL2, enjoying my 120 FPS at full settings and all... and then BAM randomly! FPS = 15-20

What the heck?! Why would my FPS randomly drop down to such a low number? I CTRL+ALT+DELETED really fast and looked... theres no other programs running that would steal power.

It does it in CS:S too. It doesn't do it at specific times, or for a certain ammount of time... I checked the console too didn't see anything that should have caused it. Any ideas? (It did this before I got my Intel Core 2 Duo too)

Anyone here know their 3DMark test score? I should have done this on my old CPU to see the difference oh well

I had a perfect CPU test while compiling my map:
Old CPU: 1 hour for the (vis) part I think
New CPU: 30 minutes

Old CPU: 8 min for RAD
New CPU: 3 min for RAD

I'm thinking about overclocking them another 400 MHz but my power supply is struggling as it is so.. I might break it by doing that.. :zonked:

I really like the look of those screenies, just remove the cracks on the walls (Where they look like cheap duplicate side-ways trees) and it will be great :)

I liked the broken pillars especially the cracks there fit perfectly :D

Edit: Oh, and if you replace the wall cracks.. Make them start from somewhere, not just making a crack in the middle of the wall. As in, make one side of them start from the ceiling or something.

Is not a waste at all... Those who make good maps don't make them overnight, it takes months to learn how to make quality ones. Not to mention that it can take weeks of a persons spare time to make and test them.

If your still not convinced, think about 3D Models. People pay money for them, and it is very similar to mapping. And what about gaming companies? They hire people to make the levels (I don't know the specific job but someone has to make them :P)

The idea of a "freelance mapper" isn't stupid at all IMO.

I don't understand the problem people have with Source... I love the new graphics, the realism... I think some people just need to learn to suck it up and adapt to the new gameplay.

Well, it does add more realism which is cool to think about... But on the other hand I like CS for its simple, non-dynamic gameplay and I dunno about the change.

Oh... and Flamethrower and RPG ftw!

It's about time :D

I'm suprised you don't see more advertisements for mapping and such because it really would be an interesting business. Clans get a good map to play on that makes them more popular (mostly if it advertises them) and the mapper gets some "reputation" with people. It is definitally a form of art in my opinion - takes time, skill and effort and the idea of selling all those makes sense :)

in Custom Sounds Problem Post #198236
Okay I have 2 custom sounds atm, ones a buzzing noise and ones a song and I just can't get them to work. I started off with the buzzing and I made an ambient_generic and set the directory to "de_bedroom/buzz.wav" (Real directory "counter-strike source/cstrike/sounds/...")

I was able to hear this one in hammer, but not in the game ... odd... anyway. (Also if I just moved the sound to the main sound/buzz.wav it wouldn't work in hammer for w/e reason)

After worrying about the size of these files I converted them to MP3 format using the same type of thing but now the directory is "mp3/buzz.mp3"...

Now I can't get the sound to play in hammer or in game ><

There was a lot to explain in that so it probably sounds jumbled up to people other than me so if you have any extra questions on clarity or such I'll be glad to answer.

Okay I'm at a loss here... I recently made some changes to my map, saved it, compiled and came back later to try the map. I had to rebuild the cubemaps showing that something changed, but I didn't understand because it was the same map as it was before the changes/fixes.

So I figured okay maybe I screwed something up... I deleted the .bsp in my counter-strike source folder and then double checked that I had the right map opened in hammer and compiled again. I come back later and it did the same thing. Had to rebuild cubemaps yet it was the same, old, version of the map.

Ahh I know this isn't a photoshop site but I figure you guys know more than me about this...

For the pop cans and for future refrence it would be really useful to know how to even out the lighting on my textures / try to remove some reflections because basically I've stopped getting textures using my camera because of problems with lighting, anyone have any links or something for this?

I did some searching on my own but I must be enterng the wrong keywords because I can't find one telling me what I'm looking for :(

So, for my map I'm going to need some oversized pop cans (at least that would be nice)... Now making them Wouldn't be the hardest thing but getting realistic looking textures on the other hand...

Moving on to the question, does anyone know where I can find some custom pop can models, or at least textures for them? Normally I'm preety good at getting my own textures but since they curve around the can it makes it kind of difficult- but if anyone has any other suggestions on how to get my own I'd be happy to try that too :)

Yea for one thing I have a texture of my keyboard with a white background (and my keyboards got all sorts of curves and such; but i took the clipping tool and cut it up myself so it has like 1000 pieces that make it up (I'm probably doing this the stupid way aren't I :P) and I think that's part of the reason... in To Avoid Corrupting Files... Post #194332
Okay so in my old map de_bedroom which I liked the most (It was under the name Anonymous for w/e reason I did that..).. after a lot of work put into it, the .rmf became corrupt, and now that I am working on a new version for source I want to make sure that doesn't happen again:

So, what can I do to avoid corrupting files? Does CTRL+ALT+DEL .vmf's that are compiling cause this? I'm afraid to do it but somethings wrong because my not so big map has taken ~4 hours to compile and its still going, freezing my computer up so I can't do anything else..

A good idea would be to make backups of course, any others :) ?

Okay, I've played maps that have camera's before in counter-strike source (or at least I think they did) but when I go to make a point_camera entity it doesn't exist under the CS:S configuration for Hammer :(

I didn't see a func_screen either but I did see info_camera_link. Did they put an info_camera_link entity in for jokes or is there a different entity you use to make the actual camera?

I'm experimenting with dynamic lights (following the tutorial from Snarkpit) where you have a light hanging down from the ceiling. I managed to get that far and it seems to work but when you get in game the light starts spazzing out and shaking and moving some how even though there are no outside forces acting on it. Any ideas on why its doing this, I probably messed something up with the rope :zonked:
