The metamod repo has seemingly complete entity lists, and we are missing a lot: https://github.com/alliedmodders/metamod-hl1/tree/master/metamod/ents

It would also be good to have articles for light_surface and other compiler entities

Do this work on point entities? If not, need to specify that it only works on brushes.

I thought the tutorial series needs an addendum as to what other things you might want to set up for your mod; stuff that isn't related to in-game content. Feel free to add whatever I may have missed.

Also it's past midnight and I have to postpone integrating this to the rest of the tutorial's navigation.

Commented 1 year ago2022-10-16 13:05:16 UTC in wiki page: Tutorial: How to Make HD 1080p Backgrounds for HL1/Goldsrc Games Comment #104847
Here's a way better method, using irfanview.

Exporting background image to tiles using Irfanview

  1. Download and install/extract Irfanview
  2. Open image with Irfanview
  3. Change canvas size to best-fitting multiples of 256 (in this case 2048x1280)
    1. Select Image > Change canvas size
    2. Select Method 2
    3. Type in values 2048 and 1280 for width and height
    4. Select anchor top left
    5. Click OK.
  4. Export image tiles
    1. Select Options > Export image tiles
    2. Type 8 and 5 for columns and rows (remember, cols > rows)
    3. Set destination to your mod's resource/background folder
    4. Set image type as TGA
    5. Click Start
    6. Wait until operation finishes. Find the image tiles in your destination folder.
  5. Crop the right edges
    1. Open Irfanview batch mode (File > Batch conversion/Rename)
    2. Select the image tile named Mx8 (M is the row numbers 1-5) (5 files total)
    3. Press Add, or drag them to the listbox at the bottom of the dialog
    4. At the far left side, select Work As: Batch conversion
    5. Enable Use advanced options
    6. Click Advanced...
    7. UNCHECK every checkbox EXCEPT CROP (top left) and Overwrite (lower right)
    8. Enter these values under CROP:
      • X-pos: 0
      • Y-pos: 0
      • Widh: 128
      • Height: 256
      • Start corner: Left Top
    9. Press OK
    10. Press Start Batch
    11. Wait for batch operation to complete.
      • The log should report itself replacing the files. If not, you have to try again, and double-check the Advanced dialog.
    12. Click Exit batch.
  6. Crop the bottom edges. The process is similar as previous.
    • For step 2, replace with files with 5xN suffix (N is the column numbers 1-8) (8 files total)
    • For step 8, replace the following values:
      • Widh: 256
      • Height: 56
  7. Check your tiles. It should be in these dimensions:
    • 256x256 uncropped (MxN, M=1-4, N=1-7)
    • 128x256 for the right edge (Mx8 suffixed files)
    • 256x56 for the bottom edge (5xN suffixed files)
    • 128x56 for 5x8 suffixed file
    1. If not, you need to repeat from step 4 (mis-cropped) or steps 5/6 (not cropped)
  8. DONE

I discussed stuff like this with a friend recently, slightly younger than me, and another friend a while ago, slightly older than me. I'm feeling the exact same, and I'm turning 21 in February. No job, no interesting projects to show to get one, feeling like every little fort I try building collapses like a house of cards. It really sometimes feels like we've invested in the wrong things early on.

Life is not a race though. It's more like a long, transcontinental trip. For the ones who have a car, it's easy! For you and me, well, all we can do is walk for now. It's hard. Lots of bugs, swamps, storms in the way and we barely have any place to hide. But eventually we'll make it.

I feel that, for every person who gets life sorted out in their early 20s, there's probably a few dozen others who are about as lost as you and me. So don't worry, hang in there. Eventually we'll get a piece of that cake too.

I wonder if some of the more experienced folks here will share some wisdom. Cuz' I know for a fact nobody has life figured out, it all boils down to essentially making the best out of your current life situation. Personally I just enjoy the smaller things to stop thinking about this source of dread that is my future.

It’d be nice to set up a TWHL Sven Co-op game once in a while, not for this map in particular (though I wouldn’t mind). I think it’d be great, there’s so much to try out.

Being a teen is hard enough, and being an autistic teen makes that exponentially more difficult.

Sorry you're stuck in such a hard place now. I agree with everyone else that things will be brighter.

I had to fight my way through middle school, and I am a doctor and a pilot now. There's hope for you yet.

This is awesome. Although, attempting to load the FGD in the latest Steam version gives an error
Error: Line 14467 is incomplete
I looked at the Line given in the error. I'm guessing this is the source of the error:

iconsprite("fgd/half-life/Advanced_FGD Sprites/trigger_auto.spr") iconsprite()

As I mentioned in one of the Screenshots, J.A.C.K does not support multiple sprite(), iconsprite() or studio() parameters in one line. (at least as long as I've seen it in the Free version)

Another situation I've seen in the free version is that it only renders the last parameter.

@PointClass base(Monster, GenericMonster, CustomModelMonster, BodySkin, Monster2) studio() iconsprite("fgd/half-life/Advanced_FGD Sprites/monster_generic.spr") studio("fgd/half-life/Advanced_FGD Models/Arrows/monster_generic.mdl") = monster_generic : "Model Customizable Generic Monster" []

For example, because the last parameter in this entity is studio("fgd/half-life/Advanced_FGD Models/Arrows/monster_generic.mdl"), only the Arrow model is rendered in J.A.C.K.
Thought this would be useful in development of the JACK version
Since I've noticed this problem I think the only solution is to keep the parameter count [ number of sprite(), iconsprite() or studio() ] at 1 in the definition lines of all entities. Which means a big downgrade in FGD for the JACK version.
Also, what markup language do you use in Notepad++ for this? Or did you create your own?
I didn't use a Markup language for FGD. I used Notepad++ but used it as normal writing.

I'm sure a lot of people here can relate to your primary school experience. Don't worry, it gets better :)

Big change for me at that age was finding more hobbies I could share with people outside the digital space. A lot of cool things already have great and welcoming communities around them. For me it was indoor climbing - something I still do today 15-20 years later! Maybe it's sport or music or theatre or chess or painting or woodwork or sailing - or anything! Having at least one thing separate from your digital life and your school life can be hugely beneficial.

Stop Typing Like This, Please. It Is Incorrect. Your text is very hard to read because of that.

I hope your life situation improves. I can relate, I had really bad classmates in primary school and was bullied a lot in 6th grade. 7th grade onward had less bullying, but my classmates made every day an inconvenience because it was fun to them.

But if I learned one thing, it's that life is like a wave. It goes up and down. And from what I can tell, you've been going down quite a bit, which only means one thing: it's about to go up.

Still had crashings even without those folders.

I resorted to editing the liblist.gam and comparing it to another mod that also uses vanilla dlls and is confirmed to work - USS Darkstar. I replaced gamedll to match darkstar's so it now reads:
gamedll "..\valve\dlls\hl.dll"

the edited liblist.gam:
// gamedir "cubicles"
game "TWHL Cubicles"
startmap "cubicle01"
trainmap "cubicle01"
version "1"
// gamedll "dlls\hl.dll"
gamedll "..\valve\dlls\hl.dll"
// cldll "1"
mpentity "info_player_coop"
url_info "TWHL.co.za"
// hlversion "1110"
type "singleplayer_only"
And now it runs!

I like that you are making a big forest map, that's not too common. And you use sounds a lot, that's very important :)

You can delete most of the files from the download. Many are included in Half-Life already, and many others are not used by your maps. Your maps only use the following files:
Alien word.wad
chateau.wad
Cosmic Horror1.wad
CrazyD.wad
cs_cbble.wad
cs_havana.wad
cs_office.wad
de_airstrip.wad
de_piranesi.wad

If you remove the other files that aren't needed, you cut the size down from 580 MiB to 126 MiB. This means faster downloads and less space wasted. Of course, since this is just a prototype it's not a big deal

Because there is no indication that anyone has played your map, and because your map crashes the game for me, I have renamed this and moved it from "Completed" to "Problems".

Your map crashes the game with a missing WAD error message because you forgot to include kz_mountain.wad. When I create a kz_mountain.wad, the game crshes with the error message "Bad surface extens 1616/0 at position (1024, -1728, 1328)".

If you decide to fix your map, don't forget to include the skybox (gfx/env/hairyface*.tga)

For peoples which having problem with the "origin" brush: This brush have to be tied to your door as entity (func_door or func_door_rotating).

About the place to put it, the door will slide / rotate around it, usually I put it somewhere inside the door according to my needs. Just try it :).
