Oh I did. It's the "go away" part that bothered me.

He probably wont get people from here, but he seems well intentioned. Just let him do his thing, and he'll probably never post here as soon as this thread dies. (Too bad, I liked his name)

Because you're just being closed-minded.
He's being more of realist imo.

You could remake some of the starting chapters if you wanted to I guess, but beyond that you would need a massive team of extremely skilled programmers to get the goldsource engine anywhere close to where it would need to be.

You can start if you want. Its more or less an 'anything' compo.

judges are supposed to be impartial.
But rarely are.
I resent that :o

As far as map a book goes (which we aren't doing), if we were to choose it a simple wiki-spree could get us judges in the mindset. The quality of the mapping accounts for more than the loyalty to the book I would think.

A nightmare is a dream, but a dream isn't a nightmare.

Nightmares are generally understood to be scary or at least highly unlikable by whoever's having one. Its a 'classification' of dream.

If map a dream passes, you'll get to map a nightmare too if you want.

I have a concern with 'map a dream' though. What criteria are we supposed to judge on? Dreams encompass so much stuff that it might as well be a "map whatever you want" competition. It'll come down to what me/other judges think should win based strictly on opinion. :/

Our goal here is to carve down the ideas that we're interested in to make a final vote afterwards.

When you say your vote, please include the number. Once your vote has been counted, I will make it purple so I don't get confused.

I will copy this post into the first post so the vote counts are easy to find (and not in the middle of the page). I wont update this post anymore.

We're going to get a competition going, and you guys are going to vote on what you guys want. Here's how this is going to work:

-You guys will put up ideas in this thread, while I will keep this first post as updated as I can.

-The ideas that I discourage will have italicized comments next to them, usually for requiring too much custom content. (That kind of thing is entry prohibitive)

-This competition will be goldsource + source, so dont put in an idea that can be accomplished in one but not the other. (IE: no Xen landscapes or physics bonanzas)

-After a week or so of taking ideas, you will all vote on that I've locked in. (I don't want to change votes back/forth as new ideas come in)

-Once we vote, I expect the votes to be pretty divided. Ill take the three ideas with the most votes and we'll do a re-vote on those.

If a tie-breaker should happen, we might have to re-vote again. -_

-After we decide on a theme we'll get a competition page up.
EDIT:

Since this thread is basically dead, we shall begin voting!

Our goal here is to carve down the ideas that we're interested in to make a final vote afterwards.

When you say your vote, please include the number. Once your vote has been counted, I will make it purple so I don't get confused.
Ideas so far:

1) Map an adventure. -- A little generic -- Votes: 0

2) Map hell. -- Votes: 0

3) Map heaven. -- I think both engines would have a hard time filling the clean and flowery niche -- Votes: 0

4) Map a haunted house. -- Custom content prohibitive -- Votes: 0

6) Remake Black mesa's lab/ intro area to hl1. -- Votes: 0

7) Remake any part from half life one, but better of course! -- We've sort-of done this, but if you guys want it again I wont judge. -- Votes: 0

8) Psycadelic adventure. Hallucinations and a "magical" adventure. -- Custom content might be an issue, and it would be harder to pull off in source -- Votes: 0

9) Make a map that has different music for each area influencing each. -- Votes: 0

10) Design a cliff side home. -- A well rounded cliff-scape could be difficult in goldsource -- Votes: 1

11) Make an abstract map/place. -- Votes: 0

12) Map a secret/ secret place. -- Votes: 4

14) Map a dance club. -- A little cheesy methinks -- Votes: 0

15) Map a trap. -- Votes: 0

16) Map a Dynamic Environment -- Interesting, but could be a bit source/goldsource segregated. -- Votes: 1

17) Map an old, decayed environment. -- Votes: 0

18) Map a nightmare. -- Its quite possible every map could use the same set of textures. Depends on your definition of nightmare. -- Votes: 0

19) Map SCIENCE! -- Votes: 3

20) Map an alien abduction -- Votes: 0

21) Map a cartoon. -- Might be difficult depending on how photo-realistic the cartoon is/custom content prohibitive -- Votes: 0

22) Map a TV show. -- Votes: 0

23) Map something "watery". -- Votes: 1

24) Map a wasteland. -- Votes: 0

25) Map a Temple. -- Votes: 1

26) Map a Dream. -- Votes: 8

Cowboy Bebop was fun I thought.. The setting is pretty cool and the action is good.

Same thing with Outlaw star. Another space setting like coyboy bebop. The setting is awesome and the story is also pretty cool.

Full Metal Alchemist and Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood are also pretty good, although watch the regular FMA first. The second one starts a bit rushed and identical to the first.. but then it diverges and gets pretty good.

I'm still a bit shady about that unlimited detail stuff. A Voxel system like that cant do as much with lighting like polygons can, so I dont know that I care for it. You can make something as detailed as you want but if the lighting sucks then eh -_-.

Code::Blocks is a free C/C++ IDE.

Visual studio comes with a compiler.. and Code::Blocks has a version of it you can download that has a compiler with it.

I was trying to help you know, don't be an ass >_>

You really should learn C++ if you want to do things beyond changing hard-coded values and copy/pasting the code you find on tutorials.

It's not something you can just pick up and run with.

I hate saying it, but you probably aren't ready to mod HL1's code at all if you dont even have a favorite IDE.

You might try code::blocks, but visual studio really is better if you can 'find' a copy.

My name is Brent Morris. Brent as I understand doesn't exactly mean anything as it is quite new as far as names go.. As for Morris, I guess ill just steal Urby's definition above.

I'm not exactly sure what Ancestry I should be considered because my family went through a redneck/white trash stint. They moved from California to Texas at some point and they didn't care to remember or pass down any history at all <3

From what I can tell though.. I've got a bit of German/Dutch in me as far as ancestry goes.

I've lived in the north/northeast Texas area my entire life otherwise.

Happy, kdunivan?

Also... If I ever won the lottery, I would do like Tetsu0 with the TWHL get-together. That would be awesome :D

Because I assume the "Resume" section is going to be straight text, you might surround all the content with a white box background. You would still need to give the picture tiles there a darker border, but when you get around to putting in a resume, you'll be able to read it.

The white background thing will also help to save people's eyes from the disrupting star-burst pattern in the back.

Mass Effect online would rock..

You cant totally demean MMO's though.. I really enjoy the premise of ongoing worlds full of actual people, but I dont think a smashingly 'good' one has come out yet.

The one I like the most would have to be eve online.. You cant call it spreadsheety because everything has a weakness. A bigger ship and more guns doesn't mean that its better. I will admit there's a lot of stuff to wrap your head around at first though.

Also.. Guild Wars was the most boring thing I think I've ever played. It doesn't have a good feel. I never got into it.
