You can run GTA4 on low settings on a pretty basic system. My old PC ran it ok on low settings with the occasional FPS drop.

Unfortunately, whether its down to bad optimisation during the PC port or not, GTA4 needs nothing short of an entirely top of the range system to play on High/MAX settings.

If the intention is to improve his skills in order to use them serious projects, the first thing to do would be to stop using paint. It is a terrible program and he should not be using it while trying to develop his skills in graphic design.

Also, you got my name wrong. Your point is now irrelevant.

I have never and will never play a pirated game. The concept of trying the full game for free and seeing if you like it is not how the world works. That's like going to a resturaunt, eating a meal, and then refusing to pay because it's not as nice as you expected it to be. Bollocks.

I don't pre-order unless a title can prove to me that it is not going to be shit, before it has been reviewed. As such I have never pre-ordered a game.

I read reviews, watch gameplay vids, or (despite the lack on PC these days) play demos. Basically I do my research.

in Mods going commercial Post #290280
So what do you guys think about mods going commercial and having to be purchased through Steam?

It happened to Raindrop and now it's happening with Dear Esther. I also heard rumours that the new They Hunger on the Source engine was to be a commercial release right before they stopped updating the site and vanished off the face of the Earth.

Personally, I have mixed feelings. For one, I'm glad for the creators because I guess it means they will get some payoff for their hard work. Then again, I hate it because I rarely have the extra cash sitting around to actually purchase games or expansions. I was looking forward to playing Dear Esther's remake in all its glory and now I'm going to have to resort to it's ugly, outdated version.

Muh. ?_?

It would be nice to have a place for people to put their skins and models too.

You have to be dumb to say that parallax mapping is awful
Same goes for people who ignore it's mass of flaws. It's buggy and the overall effect is not worth the massive performance cost.

That's parallax mapping in that DN3D shot.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=01owTezYC-w

It's a cool effect but when seen in game and in motion the illusion is slaughtered. Decals float over areas that are supposed to be deep in the texture and when you look at a corner it looks perfectly flat, again destroying the illusion.

You can enable this effect in the Ep1 engine and Black Mesa was using it for a while before they decided against it.

The best examples of parallax mapping are when it is used in smaller areas as opposed to whole buildings and world textures. FEAR, Fallout 3/New Vegas, and GTA4 simply use it on decals, and that is as far as it should ever go.

Why did they removed parallax mapping
It was buggy as sin and made decals look like they were floating. ssbump looks awesome imo

As usual I'm making things as clear as mud at night. :rly:

Lets say you have the word 'bump' in 3d letters on a flat surface. If you applied a bumpmap to make the lettering higher than the background the edges would be highlighted as per the left hand picture. With ssbump, it would also simulate the shadow the lettering would cast if it were a solid 3D object as seen in the right hand pic. :)

ssbump means Self Shadowing Bumpmap. Basically, with a standard bumpmap, raised sections of the texture are highlighted by light. With an ssbump applied, the raised section will also cast a shadow across the lower parts of the texture.

Bad Company 2 (Online Multiplayer)

Went back to it this evening after getting pissed off with the Vietnam expansion. There is no skill to Vietnam at all. With the spotting system, all you have to do is aim for the blip on your HUD and your bound to get a kill since all the buildings are made of paper or some shit like that. Utterly pointless.

The original BC2 hasn't lost it's charm. At they keep adding new stuff to it. Played 3 new maps today and each one is a drastic improvement over the ones in the initial release.

Played with Archie on TeamSpeak, while both of us were drinking. If there is anything more funny to listen to than a pissed of Scotsman, it's a pissed of Scotsman, slightly under the influence, chasing an enemy tank down the street with nothing but a C4 charge in his hand.

I haven't brought myself to go back to Uncharted 2 yet. I'm fairly sure I'm near the end but the combat in the game is so flat that it can get sooo boring after a few minutes. The cinematic sections are fantastic though, and fortunately, there are more of them than there are combat sections.

I live in the UK and I completely agree with Strider. :rly:

I am not saying that smart phones are not useful, but the prices they ask for the bloody things is outrageous. If it dropped down to say ?40 or something, and didn't cost even more money to use the net, I MIGHT be interested.

Note: My hatred for Apple goes far beyond the iPhone. I just think that it is a money-grabbing, shit-stain of a company.

Now Playing: Fallout: New Vegas.

I'm in favour of Fallout 3 / New Vegas and GTAIV personally. Just Cause 2 is unavailable to me for now because it's stuck up it's own arse with DX10 (I'm running WinXP still). I only ever played the demo of Just Cause 1 and I hated it.

GTAIV is appealing to me for its physics system, Euphoria. It is the only game that fully utilises it at the moment which is a huge shame because so many games could benefit from it and enhance it. It makes online dicking around sessions all the more hilarious.

Fallout 3 is astounding if RPG's are your thing. I think too many people expect it to play like an FPS, which it really isn't. If it were then it would be STALKER (the less said about that tripe the better :P ).

New Vegas was slandered to high heaven by the console tard market and at the end of the day, I'm not surprised. It is not a console friendly game. It is a hell of a lot better than Fallout 3 mechanics wise. The factions system and weapon upgrades and hours of unmarked quests and locations make it so addictive.

As for consoles, adventure games such as Uncharted 2 are prefect. I think I'm nearly finished with it but it's been a blast so far. The camera work and effects mean that the missus can watch it like an action movie while I play. :D
