It's never too late to learn something. Coding practice and theory can greatly expand your knowledge of how computers operate, and may be an incredibly useful asset later on.
I've started with Visual Basic Script (won't probably work on modern Windows, and is not a programming language), then started scripting in ERM (Event Related Model) and moved on to C++ (which is my language of choice for most coding projects). I've dabbled with Python, Java and Lua, and had a quick look at Perl. I don't consider myself to be a good coder, but I've got some practice.
It looked neat and bland at the same time. A pity that it is discontinued, as with Your current skills, You could rock it out of modding scene with a little coding help.

Congratulations!
Finishing such a big project is something I'd like to achieve in the future. I'm working on something medium/big right now, but it won't be standalone project this time.

It uses OpenGL, but latest release moved from old rendering pipeline to mostly shader based one. I've yet to update and check it's performance, a lot of optimization was mentioned in release log on Wings' forum.
Maybe it's a problem with graphics driver, have you checked that?

I've used 3ds Max, Blender, Lightwave and Milkshape 3D. I hate Blender's interface (I know it's highly customizable, but I'm not into spending an hour coniguring it's interface for my needs). 3ds Max was ok, but there were things that irked me when using it. Milkshape 3D is just bare-bones for modelling, and I forgot anything about Lightwave.
I prefer Wings 3D for modelling, it's simple, effective and convenient. Though it's designed mainly for modelling and UV Mapping, so you'd better get a plugin if you want to render something, and you can't animate in it. And it may also lack other things, as it's subdivision modeller.

I had a gastroscopy once, that's a real nightmare fuel. I'm taking meds for stomach, but I do enjoy a good herbal tea, I'm also taking grounded flax and this combination always worked wondefully.

Why do you think that you'll fail in life anyway? You will fail, but only if you'll keep repeating that. Only you can decide whether you've failed or not.
I believe that I'm successful when I try my best and work against all odds. I don't need to achieve anything to succeed. The effort and gained knowledge or skill is worth much more than the effect for me, but I do care about effects as well. Being an ok, loyal and helpful dude is also important for me.
It may be too early for you to find out what makes you successful. Just don't listen that whole "you need lots of money, huge mansion, extremely expensive stuff... to be successful" crap. That's simply put, toxic way of thinking, but I assume you already know about that.

The thing is, I'll probably be better off with (even more) future career prospects taking this path. And I'm too stubborn to just leave it for something else.
With college, I've got an abundance of free time - some days classes are ending early, downtime between lectures and/or classes, no need to study too hard. I have a lot of time for about anything, and yet I'm not even trying. Looking back, it's curious how I was much more productive when I was working my ass off for most of the day. Not only I had satisfaction for a job well done, but also I felt a strong urge to spend time on any of my projects - I wanted to spend any amount of time I had left before end of the day on my passions.
Lately I'm more like instead of letting some steam off and doing something, I let my creativity rot in procrastination.

The point is, you weren't useless and unhelpful. You actually helped me prove myself that my "lone wolf" approach to everything won't always work.
Seriously, your request for simple torch flame particles made me learn the whole particle system, create new particles, and then create whole game logic for levels. All of this in three days (SE2DevBase came much later, cause I've only recently got the idea to publish a dev base).
You still can work with me, and under much less rigid conditions, just like anyone else.

As Windawz said, it's Storm Engine 2 - modified idTech4. You may also know it as Doom 3 BFG engine.
It is similar to Quake based engine and not that hard to work with - it's just less explained than Goldsource and other engines. Really cool engine, advanced and powerful. It just takes more time to figure out what does what, but when you deal with this problem, it works like a charm.
Configuration for mapping is extremely easy, just like compiling your levels. You'll spend more time polishing your assets than configuring things to work. It's volumetric based, fully dynamic lighting engine, so it puts a lot of emphasis on optimizing lights.

I'm not talking about super powerful gaming laptops, but something that combines portability and decent power at a reasonable price. Laptop's power is dependent on what you'd need it for. I'm not using PC at all - everything I do is made on a laptop. Models, levels, writing, design etc. That's why I have a fairly stronger laptop, which is outdated by a few years already anyway. Intel core i5 2.2GHz, 4GB RAM, Geforce 920M 2GB graphics and wonderful sound suites all my needs - and that's medium range laptop.
If you need a laptop only for browsing web, writing documents or something like that, you don't need super strong laptop. If you do everything like me, using a laptop - medium range will be all that you need.

It is, but also I'd like to release something in next few years rather than decades. When I'll get enough experience from simple projects, making big stuff will be easier and probably faster.

I've got another shot of whiskey waiting, so here's to You and all the hours put into working. Cheers!
Well, there is a riddle within the title and the post. It's pretty simple.
Half-Life 3 was released faster than The Core... in a way...
We're waiting until the Penguin can swim through code again.

Thank you for good thoughts and the virtual hug!
A delay won't hurt anyone in this situation!
