How useful would a WAD vault be at twhl. I know that i would release textures every week of all sorts of themes. With some practice and junk i could make textures for source as well. Or, does anyone know a reliable place where i can post wads and link them to TWHL.

Any suggestions or help will be appreciated. :glad:

Yeah, personally, i'd map the entire world my avatar lives in. Since that's a common theme of mine. I'd also expand on the details of my gyradell theme. oh how fun it would be to explore a century old abandoned industrial greenhouse colony.

no it's not. you have to be one of two things. really good at it, or you have to know what you're doing. Alot of my recent textures are photo based.

2 days on textures and they look not-so-different from the original HL ones except for the fact that the terrain is blended nicely. Besides that setback, I made up some nice xen-type technology that's rather neat. My idea is very solid and hopefully i can get it done. :badass:

in CS vs. HL Mapping Post #129634
I mapped for CS to show a friend across the country and he doesn't have HL, so whatever. I didn't feel like compiling the same thing twice so i always made them for CS and labeled them thusly. Other than that, they would be strictly labeled "HL." But no matter how nice and "eye-candy"-ish things look, my maps are very rarely played. My friend still says he plays the original Gyradell and Castle Rimrook on a server he hosts. Though i can't connect to it for some reason :(

I haven't mapped for HLDM cuz i'm still a student of the editor. I should probably learn more before releasing maps to be played. If i want my maps played, i'll make sure their played for along time based on their quality. Each of the maps that end up on TWHL are simply fragments of my studies in 3D design. I know very well that i will benefit so greatly from my mapping experiences in the future years of college.

Clarified! Happy?

:glad:
if yiou want a strategic, planned out gameplay with realistic objective that are versatile, then go CS.
I agree. I have purposely mapped for CS because i'd like to see organized assault rollout on my own maps, but i grew out of it and kinda shot for stretching my skills. If i had my own CS server, in which i did for a while, more CS maps would be around from me.

blah blah blah i stfu now.

in CS vs. HL Mapping Post #129629
CS is a strategic environment, so not only it is limited with gameplay objectives, you can't make a map too complex to intricate 'cuz it will leave the players running around like chickens with their heads cut off. HLDM for example, people run around like chickens with their heads cut off anyway! so you can give people interesting things to climb, jump, and shoot from without having some n00b complaining that the map sucks, HLDM is simply "STFU and play"

two cents

I agree to this alot. Given that, to me, it sounds like teleportals are gonna be plenty, in fact that teleportals are mostly what was used on Xen. Play through the Xen stages of HL (you can type "map c4a1" in console for a shortcut) and take notes. I found alot of things i never noticed before.

I think a xen map would be fun, because it would see who would suck at it the least, and he would be the winner.

Or you could try some of these themes:
+Elevators
+Gargantuas
+Trains
+Remake your favorite scene from HL1
+Island Map
+Cliffs
+Single material themed map (wood, concrete, brick, etc.)
+Cartoon Map (great if you suck with making textures)
+Single .wad (like a wad from CS, NS, or something...)
+Map your dream house
+Map a nightmare

that's all that i can remember atm.

in Who's What, When? Post #127095
Ok... I'm thinking a poll could be started to tell everyone what mods of HL everyone has. Cuz i want to do mapping for Spirit, but always hear.

..."I don't have steam .... wah wah wah ... I don't have spirit blah blah."

So WHAT DO YOU HAVE people? I want my maps to be played, but i don't know who's has what, or even when they have it cuz people delete stuff. I think it should be a feature to have a list of tags like in the map vault on our account info saying what we have and what we map for. Personal preference is all that is really.

Someone agree with me, i know this issue is rather unique to us all.

I could map for anything, but Spirit. and i want to map for spirit more than anything right now. It's like sex, my nerded ways are my gift and my curse. :furious:

i thought of a compo that might be fun, but tell me if this could be done first before i start anything.

The compo is a base-map compo where you get 4 islands to choose from. then you map on the island of your choice. you can map whatever theme you want, it must be on the island.

what do you guys think? any thoughts?

Impenetrable walls are like this.

The HL1 engine allows bullets to go through walls. We all know that. But bullets only travel through them for certain distances. How ever, if your place two walls together with a small gap between them, the bullet will not go thorugh the second wall. The bullet will simply hit the second layer and disappear. Easy as that. If you care about r_speeds, you can even null the inside walls of the gap. ~Presto

You can't map straight when you have vengeance in mind. It's like the dark side of mapping and it doesn't work. If there is any advice to give, this would be it.

SLOW DOWN AND TAKE YOUR TIME LEARNING

...and about carving, it's ok to use it but read about how to use it first. For starts, only carve blocks. Don't go into cylinders and pyramids and stuff like that. Also, learning the use of the Vertice Manipulation Tool (VM Tool) is vital for good mapping.

Read, Try Examples, Learn, Have fun.
Consider yourself lucky, when i started, i had no internet nor knowledge of tutorials or online resources. I mapped for a year before i joined twhl.

it's some kind of coplanar argument thingy. i get those sometimes. i usually simplify the angles and that usually fixes. I think it has somehting to do with the concave angle along the edge beneath as shown in the screeny. As i said already, simplify the area.

minor details have been added. that's better a bit better.
i noticed you taken off a trim to the base of the wall. i think it looks funny in a way. i also noticed that the angle of the slopes used in the trim are (i think) 45 degrees. i think this reaches too far out into the open space of your map. if i'm wrong, disregard this. (hard to tell from the screenshots) i see the door in the later screen doesn't have a doorframe, and if it's a specified area beyond that, throw in a sign next to the door. the center of your room just seems blah. maybe a bench would live it up. but what ever.

wait... who agrees with me that this would be a very fun compo. pick a scene from HL1 and remake that area. I would so do that. how about you guys?
