Don't forget: If you're using HL1, CS1.6 (and possibly CS:CZ), the maximum texture size is 256x256. For HL2 and CS:S, it's 512x512.

There is also that new mini-strider type thing(is that the strider-buster?).
According to a PC Gamer article about HL2:EP2, those "mini-striders" are called Hunters. And I believe the Strider-Buster is a new weapon to take down Striders that launches something that latches onto the Strider and leeches its energy...or something. It's functional in EP2.

Probably. I know some companies will have a beef with you if you use some of their stuff even if you're not profiting from it. It's better (and safer) to make your own stuff.

No specific head, actually. For now I wanted to put the g-man's (with a change in hair color), gordon's and otis's head on the scis. I've already decompiled the models, but only the player (gordon) has its own head model. The G-man has a full model and otis has a head and arms. I'm not really an advanced modeler, so I'm pretty much stuck.

Is there a good tutorial or some other form of instruction on how to add new heads to scis and how to take the heads off other models and put them on the sci? I tried Vassy's "Editing Half-Life Models" tut but that didn't help much. Do I have to code in the new heads?

It appears to me you're using an old version of the Half-Life editor. Might I suggest upgrading to the latest Hammer 3.5? Just a suggestion.

And I've never mapped for CS, but don't you need a seperate func_ladder entity to cover the ladder brush?

I remember when I first joined TWHL I wanted to start a mod of my own as well. Even had the story worked out and everything. Unfortunately, I had no mapping skills at the time, so I had to give up that dream. One of these days I might make that mod, but for now I'm just focusing on developing my mapping skills and having fun doing it.

Or you could always make a document a func_button and have text pop up on the screen when the user presses the use key. Got that idea from Brendon Chung's "Bootleg Squadrog." Although I think there's a limit to how many func_buttons you can use in a map.

The poses don't fit the dialouge (ie, where the lady was screaming after the scientist's head fell off, it looked as if she was yawning.) Plus the plot was kinda bland.

after that many days... that's really bad dude.
At least I did it without the help of an alliance, AND while on peace mode. The only aid I ever recieved was $10,000 meant for tech.

You guys can focus on trying to be the strongest nation and wasting each other. I'll just focus on developing my nation and keeping out of the way.

So what? Efficiency means nothing other than how well a nation is doing, and is calculated by Strength divided by days played.

Anyway, I'm almost at a high enough tech level to where I can finally buy a tank or two.

Alliances suck. There was a big fiasco a while back between the NAAC and the NPO/GATO for some reason (corruption or something). I heard about it from a friend who was in a top position in the NAAC for a time before being targeted by the GATO/NPO and switching to the NPO Blue alliance. So I pretty much turn down invitation requests.

I've been playing some foreign mods lately (Half-Life: Emergency and Force of Evil), but I can't understand a darn thing since they're written in different languages (Russian and Czech respectively). They look like good mods, but they make me go "WTF?" a bit too often.

Anyway, you should try RandMap. This thing generates random maps for you so you don't have to go searching for mods all the time.

As for SHL, has anyone figured out who that anime chick is?

I think I might enter this contest, just for fun. I have a cool idea of making the map look as if it was destroyed by a computer virus (including amusing error messages). One thing, though. When the player starts the map, does there have to be a pre-destruction stage, or can they just get right into the action?

Actually, no. According to the Valve Development Community, Dev-C++ is an IDE, not a compiler. The real workings of Dev-C++ involve the MinGW compiler, which has not successfully compiled the SDK. However, there IS a free version of VC++, called VC++ Express 2005

I think you're overlooking what could be and just focusing on what is. Have you ever thought that maybe X has a personality of his own? He loves, he fights, he thinks. A houndeye may be of lesser intelligence, but that depends on your definition of intelligence.

Also, to combat your "no communication we can't understand" argument: An alien slave can't communicate in language we understand, but Point of View turned out to be a good mod. This mod was, of course, made before HL2.

And the sonic attack can always be altered. Plus, it would give the player more of an incentive to keep his squad alive, since houndeye usually can maximize the power of their attacks when they're in a group.

I just came up for a new idea for a HL1 mod, but due to my poor mapping and coding skills as of now, I can't act upon it, so I'm offering it to you guys if you want it.

The mod is called "My Bretheren." You are X, an innocent houndeye caught in the middle of the Resonance Cascade fiasco. On Xen, you and your pack discover a human campsite and suspect something is amiss. Suddenly, you are caught in a portal storm and are transported to BMRF. At this point, you are alone, wandering the complex aimlessly trying to figure out where you are. Luckily, your houndeye bretheren were teleported to the facility as well, and with their help, you try to find a way home. As you wander around, you find out your mother, Yah, has been captured by the researchers. Freeing her, you and she go alone and continue the journey. Unfortunatly, Yah is shot down by a group of marines and left for dead. Too heartbroken to go on further, you stay with her body and die with the complex.

I had different ideas on how this mod would function, namely:

a) Third person view. I think it would be rather difficult to have the game in FP, because there aren't many interesting things you can do at that level.
b) Three attacks: A melee bite, the sonic burst and a burst jump that allows you to jump higher.
c) Like in OP4, you'd be able to lead a squad of your buddies into battle.
d) Multiple spieces of houndeye, like a Jungle Houndeye, Cave Houndeye, etc. Adds more variety.

This isn't a demand for someone to make my mod for me. I'm just throwing out ideas to anyone who has writer's block. Enjoy.

There's a Sven-Coop map called "Wrongworld", as well as a map called "Hnaii - Office Komplex" (that one's on PlanetPhillip) that could give you ideas on how to do an alternate dimention.

The plot seems a bit cliched, though. Why not make the player an innocent bystander in whatever happens? Maybe give them limited weapondry and remove the HUD to make it more dramatic.
