A mesh of triangles used to create terrain and other elements of a map which would otherwise take a large number of brushes to make.
Displacements are used in the Source engine. More information in the tutorials on displacements
You can create similar structures in Goldsrc using vertex manipulation. More information in the tutorials on terrains in Goldsource
